Ivan Marković

markovicivanInternational Master Ivan Marković, the man behind the concept of the CHOPIN Subscription Service and co-founder of the company, is naturally also one of Chess Openings 24/7‘s greatest assets – his extraordinary, multidisciplinary, talents make him an indispensable member of our team.

As one of the most gifted juniors in the former Yugoslavia, he won the national U-15 (twice) and U-20 Championships, and took bronze in the European U-16 in 1988 (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden). His rating peaked at 2504 with one GM-norm, since he chose mechanical engineering and subsequent academic pursuits (he has a PhD in Education) over a competitive chess career. Nevertheless, he remains close to chess as a successful trainer and lecturer.

He mentored Borki Predojević to U-12 and U-14 European and U-16 World Junior titles, and coached the Yugoslav national women‘s team to their silver medals in 1999 (Batumi, Georgia), which earned him the National Award for Extraordinary Contribution to the Development and Affirmation of Sport. One of his fondest memories is of his visit to Botswana in 2000, when he helped some of their national team achieve international titles at the Zonal tournament in Gaborone during his brief stint as coach.

In 2006, he wrote the entire curricula and syllabi for chess as an elective subject in the Serbian primary school system, and co-wrote the official textbook and workbook “3, 4, pozor – šah!“ (Ready, Set, Chess!). He had been teaching at the Faculty of Teacher Training in Belgrade (2007 – 2012), and in 2008 he began lecturing at the Faculty of Sport and Physical Training as well (2008 – 2010; 2016 – present). As the University of Belgrade chess team captain, he led his students to ten consecutive Transatlantic Cup matches against the University of Texas at Dallas (2006 – 2015).

Ivan worked for the Belgrade branch of the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising agency in 2001, and also brings to the table his working experience as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Chess Informant (2002 – 2004), which, along with his perfectionist analytical skills and deep understanding of changes in modern chess, gave birth to the ambitious idea behind Chess Openings 24/7. He wouldn‘t have made it this far without the love and understanding of his incredibly supportive wife, Anita, and his little bundle of joy, daughter Lira.
