[August 09, 2017] Updated Opening Line from Dragan Paunović:
Trompowsky Attack with 2… Ne4

[Line 075 : 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4]

This update is a small tribute to our late colleague GM Dragan Paunović. In memory of our dear friend, our Editorial Board will continue updating his lines and articles.

Move 3. Bf4 is White’s usual choice in the initial position of this opening line, while 3. h4 and 3. Bh4 are rarely seen in the modern practice.

After 3. Bf4 Black generally has a choice between 3… d5 and 3… c5. In the first case, after 3… d5 4. e3 both 4… c5 and 4… Bf5 give Black enough resources to equalize.

If Black plays 3… c5 the game usually continues with 4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6, where 6. d5 Qb6 7. Bc1 is played more often than 6. Nd2 cxd4 7. Nb3. These positions are a bit easier to handle with white pieces, but Black is generally able to reach satisfactory positions with accurate play.

[Diagram: Black to Move] In this imbalanced position Black has a way of securing a long-term initiative. Any thoughts?
